James Handy, an esteemed character actor, passed away recently at the age of 81 years old. James Handy is well-known for appearing in such popular films as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” and “NYPD Blue.” On June 4th, 2026, after he was stabbed by Michael Gledhill, who was the son of Handy’s girlfriend, in Tarzana (a suburb of Los Angeles), it was reported to the public about his death. Since the news broke out, many people throughout the U.S., as well as many within the entertainment industry, have expressed their sorrow over this tragedy through various media outlets. Around 9:30 AM Wednesday morning officers responded to a radio call of an alleged “unknown trouble” (possible disturbance, fight, etc.) occurring in the area of 19200 block Erwin Street in Tarzana. Upon their arrival, they found Mr. James Handy lying unconscious in the front yard, suffering from one stab wound to the chest. He was transported by the LAFD to local hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Forty-four-year-old Michael Gledhill has been identified as the alleged stabber of Handy. Gledhill is the son of Handy’s girlfriend. In a 911 call from the suspect, he claimed to be calling on behalf of God and his “son who just murdered the devil.” Gledhill flagged down nearby law enforcement officers and identified himself as being who they were looking for – CBR The Hollywood Reporter Gledhill was booked for murder out of Van Nuys Jail with a $2 million bail and the LAPD believes that detectives believe that this incident was isolated and that there is no threat to the community at large.
