Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn dismissed claims that he lost track of the downs during a critical sequence in Monday night’s 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The viral moment occurred early in the second quarter. Facing a 4th-and-2 from San Francisco’s 13-yard line while trailing 13-3, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels threw the ball away to avoid a sack. Compounding the failed conversion, Washington was flagged for an illegal shift. As the 49ers declined the penalty to take over possession, television cameras caught a visibly animated Quinn on the sideline, leading online analysts and lip-readers to claim he mouthed, “Oh, that was fourth down?”
Quinn directly addressed the viral social media clip during his postgame press conference.
“No, I definitely knew it was fourth down,” Quinn said. “We were going for it. I think what you’re referring to, I was probably saying, like, with the illegal shift, there’s not a penalty to go for a field goal. It’s the turn on downs. I think somebody asked me, ‘Can we kick a field goal?’”
The intense focus on Quinn’s sideline management comes at a tense time for Washington, arriving just one week after a highly criticized clock-management blunder in overtime against the Giants.
Now sitting at 1-4-1 on the season, the Commanders head into their Week 7 bye week.
