Ryan Hammond and Cynthia Erivo
Ryan Hammond and Cynthia Erivo perform Hold on I’m Comin’ by Sam and Daveduring the American Idol 2019 Top 20 All-Star Duets round in front of a live audience and judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry.
Ryan shares his story of weight loss with Cynthia. She asks him if it changed his voice. An interesting question. He’s still re-discovering his voice. Ryan had never heard the song before. “I only listened to Christian music.” Oh boy. This is a completely different side of Ryan. Usually he’s belting a big meaningful ballad. But he’s a really soulful dude! I am enjoying this duet. It’s cool to see a looser, less serious side to Ryan’s personality.
And Cynthia is a gem! Katie says, “I felt the spirit! Is that church, I really felt that a lot….you really held your own in that.” She adds, “Your voice is amazing on all levels. “Your voice will carry you so far…just add a little more swagger,” says Luke. Katy asks him to demonstrate…and Luke does is famous hip swivel. Hm. Ryan seemed pretty loose to me. Lionel is impressed with the job he did, especially since he’d never heard the song.
