President Donald Trump has indicated that he is willing to slap tariffs on every Chinese good imported to the U.S. should the need arise.
"I'm ready to go to 500," the president told CNBC's Joe Kernen in a "Squawk Box" interview aired Friday.
The reference is to the dollar amount of Chinese imports the U.S. accepted in 2017 — $505.5 billion to be exact, compared with the $129.9 billion the U.S. exported to China, according to Census Bureau data.
Thus far in the burgeoning trade war, the U.S. has slapped tariffs on just $34 billion of Chinese products, which China met with retaliatory duties.
Laura-Jean Dawe Yes, the rest of the world is cancelling contracts with the USA, as we are a "Security Risk", however we are continuing to trade with each other and many are increasing crops and production for the Markets throughout the world…… the impact will be felt when your crops die in fields….. no buyers and all previous "goodwill" will take years to rebuild! China has increased it's buying of crops and goods from Canada and Brazil……. unlike the US Government, China was proactive and prepared for the sanctions by placing many orders that otherwise would have gone to American Farmers…. Many Countries are now encouraging citizens to NOT buy USA but buy domestic products instead and ……..as a Canadian , well lets just say …. I do miss twizzlers, but going without Made in USA products is my own personal protest to the insults to Canada from the "White House" and I can assure you, I am not alone…….Going Broke happens when you no longer have a market to trade with.
Eric Johnson The right thing for the country…..that must be why trump excluded all the family businesses from tariffs. Helping America…..
Sherry Dodson Foster When Trump says "our country" he means only himself, and he gives himself exemptions from the tariffs.
