A woman was walking her dog, Sophie, along the beach, when Dylan McTaggert approached her from behind and kicked the little pup for no reason.
Sophie immediately went into shock and became unconscious.
When police arrived, McTaggert was throwing punches at the lifeguards. He fled on foot but was eventually caught and arrested by the officers.
Sophie was rushed to the vet, where it was revealed that she had a collapsed lung and her heart was displaced from the force of the kick.
She has been treated for her injuries and is now resting and healing at home with her human. It took an entire 24 hours before she even recognized her owners, but she is now back to wagging her tail and is proving to be a fighter.
McTaggert was transported to the Ventura County Jail for fighting in public, assault on a lifeguard, and felony animal cruelty. He is being held in custody in lieu of $25,000 bail.
This wasn’t the first time that the police have been called on McTaggert, who lives along the illegal encampments on Ormond Beach. The police have dealt with him several times for disturbing beachgoers in the past.
“It’s very difficult to enforce right now because of the decriminalized laws in regards to some of our misdemeanors. They don’t stay in custody for very long…. It’s become a revolving door and it’s something we need to address sooner or later,” Chief Andrew Salinas told CBS LA.
Port Hueneme PD is asking any witnesses of this incident to contact them at 805-986-6530. From now on, they will have a specific officer who is assigned to this beach.
