Gabby Barrett Advances to Top 24 on ‘American Idol’

Gabby Barrett on American Idol

Final Judgment day was nowhere near as ominous as it sounded. In fact, it brought joy for Gabby Barrett.

The Munhall teen learned Monday night she will be moving on to the next round of ABC’s “American Idol.” Ms. Barrett, who turned 18 a few weeks ago, was featured in previous shows since Season 16 returned March 11.

She and 49 others were part of a showcase at Exchange LA, performing in front of a live audience and judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Ms. Barrett chose to sing “Church Bells,” by country star Carrie Underwood, a former American Idol herself.

It was a gutsy choice. When Ms. Barrett stepped up for her very first audition in Nashville, those same judges stopped her from singing it. They told her that imitating Ms. Underwood was inauthentic, and urged her to sing in her own voice.

On Monday’s broadcast, Ms. Perry was not impressed: “She’s got it, but I don’t know why she picked that song.”

“At this point in the competition, you’ve got to give it all or nothing,” said Ms. Barrett, who ended the the song belting.

When she got her sit-down evaluation the next day, the first thing Ms. Perry said was “So, Gabby, I think yesterday was bad for you.”

But Mr. Bryan chimed in, noting “I think you’re next-level and you’re what the competition needs.”

She and 23 others will sing again next Sunday in solo arrangements, and it appears some will have “all-star duets” with celebrity guests.

What did the fans think of her performance tonight:

I'm glad Katy is being very honest. I didn't think she would be that judge, but I'm glad she's not afraid to tell people what they need to hear. You can say whatever you want about her voice, but she seems very knowledgable about all of this.

Stop with the Carrie, it wasn't a risk it was stupid. Her dad should have told her not to do it, the judges told her not to and she still did it. She's got a great voice but she needs to be herself. Definitely got lucky.

Singing your favorite music by your favorite artists is always the shortest road to leaving these competitions. You have to stop being a fan and start being an artist when you hit that stage.

Not sure why someone like Gabby got through and someone like Trevor Holmes or Thaddeus Johnson are cut…
