What ‘McMillions’ Breakout Star FBI Agent Doug Mathews Thinks of the McDonald’s Fraud Doc

For over a decade, a man named Uncle Jerry defrauded McDonald’s by stealing up to $24 million in prize money from the fast food chain’s popular Monopoly promotional game. By stealing game pieces before they ever went out to the public, Jerry hand-picked winners among family and friends. But what started out as an opportunity to make a quick buck spiraled out of control as the crime ring expanded to include ex-cons, ties to the mafia and unsuspecting co-conspirators before it was shut down by the FBI.

In HBO’s six-part documentary, McMillions, directors James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte chronicle the fraud from beginning to end as they sit down with people on all sides of this unbelievably true story about greed, deception and revenge. “When you hear the story, you can’t believe that it’s actually true and this had happened,” executive producer Mark Wahlberg tells ET about what makes this series so intriguing, adding that it’s filled with a “fascinating cast of characters.”

One of those larger-than-life personalities featured on-camera is FBI agent Doug Mathews, who gleefully details his experiences in bringing down Uncle Jerry’s crime ring. In fact, the internet can’t get enough of him, with Uproxx calling Mathews “the best character on TV right now.”

Described as “lightning in a bottle,” Hernandez and Lazarte tell ET that Mathews was quite the “wild” character — but they loved every minute of working with him.

“As soon as he got on the phone, it was like, ‘When can I come to Jacksonville and see you guys?’” Hernandez says, recalling the first time they met after Mathews had spent a full day in court. “I met him at the FBI office in Jacksonville and even though he had worked all day — he didn’t get there until about six — we didn’t leave the FBI office until midnight. He was like the Energizer bunny.”

What Was His Role in the McDonald’s Monopoly Fraud?
A rookie at the time, Mathews played a pivotal role from the onset of the FBI investigation (dubbed: “Operation Final Answer”) into who was frauding millions out of McDonald’s.

Stationed in the FBI’s Jacksonville, Florida office, Mathews was bored by the white collar crimes he had been assigned when he came across a note that read, “McDonald’s Monopoly fraud?” After following up on the tip originally received by his mentor Rick Dent, he learned that three relatives all won the $1 million grand prize.

As the investigation grew, Mathews went undercover as a video production company hired by McDonald’s to revisit with all the past winners and even enlisted a McDonald’s employee, Amy Murray, to help interview them. His goal was to collect information about the winners, how they won and what they’ve since spent their money on.

What Is He Up to Now?
According to the two directors, Mathews is still an active agent based in Florida. “There’s a lot of privacy in terms of where he lives and what his family’s situation is,” Hernandez says, not able to reveal too much about his day-to-day or personal life.

“Some of his fellow agents are calling him Mr. Hollywood now,” the director adds. “Though, I think jokingly. But they also know who he is… Even in the first episode, the other agents say he was always a bit of an actor, even back then. That’s why he wanted to go undercover so bad.”

Speaking of undercover, Mathews reportedly turned down an offer from former special agent and undercover agent coordinator Janet Pellicciotti to join that team. “Doug is one of the hardest working agents I’ve ever met in my life,” she said in McMillions. “He’ll do anything. He’ll try anything and he can talk forever. He is relentless.”

According to Heavy.com, Mathews is now based in North Carolina and has been working on fraud cases in the area.

What Does He Think of the Series?
“He’s very much been watching along,” Hernandez says. “He made a comment that people in his family are tired of his jokes but still laugh at him.”

Who Should Play Him in a Movie?
While the McMillions team is not working on a film adaptation, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have teamed up to option a 2018 Daily Beast article about the same events. No formal details have been announced, but that hasn’t stopped executive producer Archie Gips from sharing who he thinks should take on one of the key characters in the story. “Mark [Wahlberg] would play Doug Matthews who is the rookie agent that basically takes on the case,” he says of the I Heart Huckabees actor.

Of course, the internet has a few ideas of its own…

McMillions: The True Story of the $24 Million McDonald’s Monopoly Game Fraud airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. Previous episodes are available to stream on HBO Go/Now.

NeNe Leakes Clarifies Her Friendship With Wendy Williams After ‘RHOA’ Announcement Drama

Any hard feelings? NeNe Leakes is setting the record straight about her friendship with Wendy Williams after the TV host’s January comments caused a stir. At the time, Williams claimed on her talk show that Leakes was leaving The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Leakes later denied the claims.

“It’s been an especially difficult couple of weeks for NeNe, and she was venting to her friend in private correspondence,” Leakes’ rep told ET at the time. “Nothing has been confirmed or officially decided for next season.”

On Sunday night’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Leakes replied to a fan who asked if she and Williams were good after the drama unfolded.

“Me, Wendy, and Marlo [Hampton] were together today. We shopped at Bergdorf and had lunch, honey,” the 52-year-old reality star replied.

“You had lunch?” Cohen asked.

“I ate lunch with you and then turned around and ate lunch with them,” Leakes quipped.

Earlier in the day, Leakes and Williams posted a clip together on social media in the backseat of a car.

“So, I’m going to Bergdorf with…” Leakes said in the clip, panning to a slumped over Williams.

“I’m busy, leave me alone. Leave me alone, right now!” Williams quipped. “Get out of my face.”

Beauséjour-Savard wasn’t the only Bachelor franchise alum who was pleased by Crawley’s announcement. When ET’s Lauren Zima caught up with former Bachelor Ben Higgins, he said that he was “100 percent shocked” by the news, but excited for Crawley’s upcoming season.

“I love that she is mature and she does know what she is looking for and she really wants to find a partner. We’ve been shocked with Colton [Underwood] when he was the Bachelor, we were shocked with Hannah [Brown] when she was announced as the Bachelorette, and it turned out great for the franchise,” he said. “So, I am shocked, but I believe this could be good.”

Likewise, former Bachelorette Becca Kufrin said she’s “all in” on Crawley’s season.

“I am excited! I watched Clare on Juan Pablo’s season and on Winter Games. I don’t know her, but I am ready to kind of go back to the basics, to bump up the maturity level a little bit and to finally have hopefully deep real connections and conversations,” she explained. “So, I am excited to watch her!”

Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette starts filming soon, while The Bachelor: Women Tell All airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Peter Weber’s season finale will air Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10.

‘Bachelor’ Peter Weber on Whether He Was Really in Love With 3 Women (Exclusive)

Peter Weber says he really did fall in love with three women while filming his season ofThe Bachelor — and he’s not sure why some fans are so upset over it.

“If I wasn’t feeling that way, I wouldn’t have said it,” he told ET’s Lauren Zima at the Women Tell All taping in Los Angeles on Feb. 21. The special will air Monday night.

“I’ve always been a firm believer that the heart wants what it wants, and I think this experience for sure has shown me that there’s not just one soulmate out there,” Weber added. “I think at some point in my life, I used to think that, and I’ve definitely been able to give my heart to more than one person. So, it’s possible.”

Still left in the running for Weber’s final rose are Madison, Victoria F. and Hannah Ann, though it doesn’t look like the pilot is in for a smooth landing. Last week’s episode saw his relationship with Madison put at risk, after she told him she wouldn’t be OK moving forward with him if he had slept with the other women in the fantasy suites. She also revealed during that episode that she was saving herself for marriage, while Weber confessed to her that he had been intimate.

As Weber told ET, he doesn’t think of Madison’s statement as an ultimatum.

“I don’t feel like it was an ultimatum. I don’t,” he insisted. “I think it was her doing what I asked every girl to do from the very first night and that was to be honest with me and share what was ever on their heart. And that’s what she did. And it…trust me, it made for an insanely, incredibly difficult week for me. There’s no doubt about that. But I can’t fault her for sharing her heart.”

Weber’s time with Victoria and Hannah Ann went a little more smoothly, with the Bachelor even calling Hannah Ann the “most perfect woman.” Weber had previously called another contestant, Sydney, the “best kisser” in the house, and has no problem making extreme statements.

“Hannah Ann is a very… no one’s perfect, but she’s very close to perfect. I’m a very passionate dude, and I’m an extremist kind of,” Weber explained. “So, I make these statements and it comes from the heart.”

“That’s just who I am,” he added.

The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. ET’s Lauren Zima will be recapping next week’s season finale, directly after the episodes on Monday and Tuesday. Watch ET Live on your Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV or you can stream on Pluto TV and Samsung TV Plus.

’90 Day Fiance’ Star Alex Brovarnik Saves Drowning Man in the Bahamas: Watch

90 Day Fiance‘s Alex Brovarnik is a real-life hero.

On Sunday, Alex’s wife, fellow 90 Day Fiance star Loren, shared video on Instagram of Alex rescuing what appears to be an intoxicated man from drowning in the Bahamas. Alex keeps the man’s head above water since he can’t keep himself upright, and eventually lays him down on the sand and checks his breathing. In the video, another man filming criticizes the passed out man’s friends for not helping him.

“And his friends are just watching this sh*t,” he says. “Look at him, he’s knocked out.  …Thank you, Alex!”

Loren, who’s currently pregnant with the couple’s first child together, said she couldn’t be prouder of her husband and also criticized the people the man was with for not helping him.

“My husband was watching a guy who was beyond intoxicated, who was with his ‘friends’ who just stood there and watched!” she wrote about the video. “The man went into the water and about drowned! As you can see, Alex is dragging out his unconscious body while his ‘friends’ did nothing!”

“We are meant to be in a place in time for a reason!” she continued. “Alex and his friend, Sean, were meant to be at this beach at this exact time because if not, who knows what could have happened! My husband saved a man’s life today! And I couldn’t be more proud, yet not surprised at the same time! Meanwhile, you can see this guys’ ‘friends’ standing there and then walking away! NOT ONE OF THEM went in the ambulance with him either! It goes to show you may think your friends are your friends, but God forbid something bad happens, would then help you or just stand there and watch you fall?! Always trust your instinct! Please share this for awareness and KNOW YOUR LIMITS!”

Alex also Instagrammed the video and noted, “I am glad I was able to be at the right place at the right time today to pull this kid out of the water before it [was] too late.”

Carrie Underwood Says Her Body Was ‘Screaming for More’ Carbs When She Was Only Eating 800 Calories

Carrie Underwood is opening up about her past diet. The 36-year-old singer covers the April issue of Women’s Health and reveals that, after her 2005 American Idol win, she went on a strict diet and exercise regimen due to some comments made online about her size.

“I shouldn’t care what other people think about me,” she says. “I was tired, and I kept buying bigger clothes. I knew I could be better for myself, and I let my haters be my motivators.”

For a while, Underwood says she was “sleeping better” and had “more energy” while following her plan, but that changed when she upped the ante on her routine, working out more and only eating 800 calories some days. The extreme nature of her plan led her to “‘fall off the wagon, then feel terrible and repeat the cycle.”

“Your body is screaming out, ‘I need more calories, I need more carbs!'” she says, adding that she “really would not call” her past diet disordered eating.

Now, Underwood is mindful of her diet, tracking both her calories and the amount of protein, carbs and fat she consumes daily. “I love rules. This is how I feel good about myself, and this is how I operate,” she explains, before revealing that her “vice” is red wine.

“It’s good for my heart, right?!” she quips.

As for her current workout plan, Underwood says she fits in time to sweat whenever she can, something that’s not always easy thanks to being a busy mom with her two boys — Jacob, 1, and Isaiah, 5. Underwood shares her sons with her husband, Mike Fisher, who she wed in 2010.

“If I can work out seven days a week — which doesn’t happen, but if I can — I’m going to. Because the next week, I might get two days,” she says. “… I’d love to sit in a bubble bath, but that’s not going to happen. My self-care is my gym time, and that’s a stress reliever for me.”

“Physical fitness makes everything else possible,” she adds.

Prior to welcoming her second child, Underwood suffered multiple miscarriages. “For my body to not be doing something it was ‘supposed to do’ was a tough pill to swallow,” she says. “It reminded me I’m not in control of everything.”

Talking about her miscarriages, though, felt like a “weight lifted off my shoulders.”

“It’s not a dirty secret,” she says. “It’s something many women go through.”

Washington is currently promoting her highly anticipated Hulu series, Little Fires Everywhere, which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Celeste Ng. The former Scandal star plays Mia Warren, a mysterious woman who becomes embroiled in the family life of the wealthy Elena Richardson (played by Reese Witherspoon).

“She’s just amazing, and a great friend,” Washington says of Witherspoon. “The sort of girlfriend who, when she asks you how you are, you can tell really cares about the response. I have such great respect for her, not only as a friend but as someone who has her own production company. She was so willing to share her mistakes and what she had learned.”

Washington has her own growing power in the industry — she now has her own production company, Simpson Street.

“I don’t even know that I saw myself as a leader, I just saw myself as a person with a lot to say,” she shares. “I think the more I started to work in this industry, I started to understand that there weren’t a lot of people who understood my perspective as a woman or as a woman of color in power, and I had to create that opportunity.”

“A lot of our mandate at Simpson Street is centering otherness and really reminding ourselves, and each other, that protagonists look like all of us — that anyone can be the hero of their own story and their own life,” she adds.

While Washington is happy to talk about work, the notoriously private actress explains why she is so tight-lipped about her personal life. She’s been married to husband Nnamdi Asomugha since 2013, and the magazine notes she is a mother of three.

“As I’ve grown older and more well-known I’ve lost some of my anonymity, so I’ve become more boundaried in my relationships with people,” she explains. “I have the pull of an artist, where you love your private life and you love the people you love, you love your children, and you also love your art.”
