America’s Got Talent 2019 Recap: Quarterfinals 2 – Live Blog Videos

The group is from South Africa and have overcome poverty and difficulties on their way to the AGT stage. The sing U2’s “It’s a Beautiful Day.” I’ll say it again. I usually don’t care for the choirs. But this group is so talented, so well rehearsed, so uplifting they are impossible to resist. I hope they make it to the final. Ha. Simon is covered in streamers. “You set the stage on fire,” says Gabrielle. Simon loves their enthusiasm, great song choice. “Everything just clicked.” Julianne says, “You guys come on this show to self-express and show us who we are.” Howie says “You are our winder to the world, you are our sunshine. You inspire, you entertain.”

Light Balance Kids – Blacklight Act – Ellie Kemper’s Golden Buzzer – This offshoot of the popular Light Balance act is entertaining. Ohh. They do a spooky thing in skeleton outfits. It’s cool. But like V. Unbeatable, it’s hard to top what they’ve already done. And these blacklight acts don’t translate well to television. That was not a step up. Gabrielle, however, felt they topped themselves. Julianne gushes, “that was unbelievable.” Oohhh. Simon is gonna tell the truth. “This didn’t have the wow factor…this felt tame compared to your previous performances.” He compares their energy to V. Unbeatable, which is actually unfair. Howie is with the girls. He can’t believe Simon hated the Billie Eilish song. The music was OK. But Simon was right. That was boring.

Tyler Butler-Figueroa – Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer – Tyler was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 4. After three years of chemotherapy, he is in remission. His mom says he spent years in the hospital. Aw. He goes back to the hospital to play violin for the patients. He plays “Don’t You Worry Child” by the Swedish House Mafia. It’s a very energetic performance. No electric violin for Tyler! He goes old school with a wooden instrument. Simon calls him “America’s Golden Buzzer…HASHTAG amazing, inspirational, current…such a great person, such a great talent.” He hopes a big DJ comes on the show if Tyler makes the final. Howie thinks people should vote him though just for overcoming so much. Gabrielle believes he may inspire kids to put down their controllers and pick up an instrument. Julianne calls him an incredible artist and an incredible human being.

Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer – I barely remember this guy, except as the guy who inexplicably got Howie’s golden buzzer. In his video package, he cries thinking about how far he’s come. He sings an original song, dedicated to his mom. It’s a mixture of rap and singing. Eh. It’s just OK? Howie calls him a shining light. “I could feel the pride shooting over our heads.” Gabrielle loves a vulnerable man, “You put your heart on this stage.” Julianne agrees with Gabrielle. She advises him not to compare himself to anybody. She felt a little apprehension. “Just be you.” Simon thought the best part of his song was his parents’ reaction from the audience, but otherwise, the performance was unremarkable. I agree with Simon, except I thought his audition was also mediocre. Joseph says “the way you treat your mom, is the way you’ll treat your wife.” Well, that will net him some votes.

Acrobatic Dance Troupe – Dwyane Wade’s Golden Buzzer – These boys have been spectacular, but they are in a position now, that it’s tough to top what they’ve done so far. The stagecraft is snazzy, including pyrotechnics. But I don’t think they’ve upped their game from last time.  “Every time we see you guys, you push the boundaries,” he says, “You make every second of those two minutes count.” Julianne says a clap isn’t enough, “You literally raise the game. This is the best performance of the night.” Gabrielle notes they were her husband’s golden buzzer. “It takes a champion to see a champion.” Howie calls it the “best performance I have ever watched.” He’s taking his entire 10 years on AGT. OK. These boys are good, but this praise is a little OT.

The Sentimentalists – Mentalists – WILDCARD – These two are a fairly mediocre mentalist act, so why bring them back? Tonight, their bit is centered on touch. So of course, they bring Howie on stage. As he tries delicious desserts, the female mentalist guesses what he’s eating. She also guesses that Gabrielle is chewing bubble gum. Eh. She’s probably wearing an earpiece or something. This is boring. Wait. She didn’t guess Julianne’s correctly? I’m confused. This act can’t put together a cohesive bit. Julianne thought the act was sloppy. They have been from the beginning. Simon called it a “total mess.” Yeah. That was bad.

Simon called it a “total mess.” Yeah. That was bad.

Ryan Niemiller – Comedian – Ryan was born without arms and hands. He felt sorry for himself at first, but then learned to control his narrative. He played football and was crowned homecoming king in high school. “I wan’t you to vote for me because I’m the funniest person you’ve ever seen.” Tonight, his jokes are about getting in shape and making New Year’s resolutions. Also trailer jokes. His tweeter handle is @CrippleThreat8. Heh. Howie calls him wonderful, memorable, funny, smart. Julianne says he was born to be on the stage. “This is your lane,” she says. Simon says, “You’re born to do this…everything worked.” He believes Ryan will be in the semi-finals. He is a pretty funny dude. Also, his positive attitude is infectious.

V. Unbeatable – Acrobatic Dance Troupe – Dwyane Wade’s Golden Buzzer –

Robert Finley is finally living his dream by singing his original song on the biggest stage in the world!

He’s a 65 year old veteran who lost his sight to glaucoma. Tonight, he’ll perform a song about his AGT experience. It’s too bad he didn’t hit back in the 70’s. It would have been his time. His voice oozes classic R&B. Simon looks happy for the first time tonight. The original he’s performing is an upbeat bluesy thing about all the love AGT has “given to me.” Robert’s daughter is singing backups. Gabrielly calls him “a gift to us all.” Howie wonders if the song will connect to young people. Howie is cute. He thinks kids are voting for AGT contestants. Julianne disagrees. “I would like to be baptized into the Robert Finley church. Simon agrees with the girls, “Five thousand people just gave you a standing ovation.”

She was a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance last year. Tonight, she promises to take a “huge risk” and “do something I’ve never done before.” Any moment, I expect an alien to come bursting out of her stomach. She’s at once compelling and creepy with the way she slithers around the stage. Simon buzzed her! She didn’t deserve that. C’mon. It’s true, your average AGT fan will probably not appreciate that. But she’s bold. Simon hated the music, thought it was boring. Wow. He really disses her. She looks pissed. Howie says, “One man’s boredom is another man’s dream. I’m married, I feel like I just cheated.” Gabrielle also loved it. “It was amazing.” Julianne says, “You are so weird, and I love weird.” So that’s 3 against 1.

Chris won Swedish Idol a few years ago. He comes from a tiny town in Sweden. “Ive been playing in small bars,” says Chris, totally leaving out his stint on Idol and his string of hit songs in Sweden.

Tonight, he sings another original, dedicated to the last moments he spent with his great grandmother. He sings, accompanying himself on guitar, his voice front and center. He’s got an impressive range. His chest voice is powerful. At first, Julianne thought he needed a band. But she changed her mind. Gabrielle agrees with Julianne. But  Simon didn’t feel the emotional connection like he did in the middle rounds. Ha. He’s playing third. Simon really hates these White Guy with Guitar types. Howie agrees with Simon. The song could have been stronger, but Chris managed to sing the heck out of it.

These two aren’t earning a living as a subpar danger act, unsurprisingly. By day, they run a bed and breakfast in New Orleans. RANDOM! Self-aware enough to know they kinda suck, the two admit they have been practicing A LOT. Oh lord. Nick is performing a really horrible version of “Ring of Fire” as Lindsay wobbles around the stage. She still can’t throw a knife straight. Literally, she misses more than she hits. Put them out of their misery, America. PLEASE. It’s so bad, Simon buzzes them. Oh. Howie buzzes them too. Simon calls his singing “the worst live singing ever.” Gabrielle says, “I loved when you cleaned your toes.” Julianne thought it was so bad, it was good.” Uh. No. “I think you went down in a ring of fire,” says Howie. Apparently she wasn’t wearing underpants the first time says Howie? Or something. Bizarre.

She’s from Marabella, Spain and has appeared on La Voz Kids Spain in 2015. Her video package features her and sis taking a tour of Hollywood. They drive by Simon Cowell’s house! She sings “Diamonds are Forever,” as song that’s way too old fashioned for her. It gives her the opportunity to show off her range. But YIKES. This performance is a snooze. It’s a teen pretending she’s Shirley Bassey. No bueno. When she finishes, she reverts back to the teen she is, chirping out a “thank you.” A pox on the person who chose that song. “Your talent is so far beyond your years,” Howie says. But he notes that the song choice was “maybe not the best.” Gabrielle calls her voice “amazing.” Julienne compares her to Jessie J. But she wanted to see more of her personality. Simon calls it a terrible terrible terrible song choice. He prays the audience votes for her anyway.

Carmen Carter and Alex Dowis is first. The first act going into the semi-finals is…Alex Dowis. Carmen Carter is ELIMINATED. Luke Islam and GFORCE are next.

America’s Got Talent LIVE Quarterfinals  1 RESULTS will be revealed tonight. Last night, twelve contestants performed in front of judges Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and Simon Cowell for YOUR votes.  Terry Crews hosts.

Performing tonight are reigning America’s Got Talent winner Shin Lim, season 1 winner Bianca Ryan, season 13 violinist Brian King Joseph and season 11 contortionist aerialist Sofie Dossi.

Bianca Ryan, season 13 violinist Brian King Joseph and season 11 contortionist aerialist Sofie Dossi all perform together. Bianca sings Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” while Brian accompanies her on Violin. Apropos of nothing, Sofie dangles from the sky on a hoop. .

In his video package, his mom talks about learning he was blind at 3 months. Not soon after, he was diagnosed as autistic. Music was the thing that made him really happy. Kodi is Gabrielle’s Golden Buzzer. His audition has had almost half a million views online. His mom sits him at the piano and makes sure he’s ok before Kodi performs “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Oh boy.

This performance really pulls at the heartstrings. He doesn’t have a great voice–he’s a better piano player. But his delivery is moving nonetheless. No chance Kodi won’t advance to the next round. He could win the whole thing. Gabrielle says, “You changed the world…we have to stop putting limits on our children.” Simon says, “You continually amaze me. We are nothing without people like you.” Paul Simon gave special permission for Kodi to sing the song. However, it’s not true that the song is hardly sung on singing shows.

This 12 year old performer is Julianne Hough’s Golden Buzzer. After his performance, Waitress creator Sara Bareilles tweeted him congratulations.  He sticks to Broadway performing “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen.  He has a very pleasing voice and a ton of potential. He needs to work on a few vocal issues, but he’s only 12. Julianne is so proud. “That voice is undeniable,” she says. Simon compliments his confidence and poise. “You’ve done yourself really proud,” he says. Howie predicts that he’ll be starring on a Broadway stage.

Messoudi Brothers – Hand Balancers – Uh oh. While they were rehearsing for the live shows, they had an accident. One of the brothers holds a cane. Yikes. The brothers begin stripping right away. They know what the audience wants. OFF COME THE T SHIRTS. They’re upping the ante with a blindfold. Although, I don’t quite get the point? Still, they once again prove their super human strength, forming different configurations. The brother that’s hurt looks to be screaming in pain. Gabrielle calls them “sexy…good job guys.” Julianne feels anxiety watching them. She loves the danger and risk factor. Simon wants something even more dangerous. “a tank full of piranhas.” That would be dumb.

Voices of Service –  Military Singing group – This group of singers are all veterans/active military members who sing for their fellow military members. In their video package, they visit a military cemetary, waxing poetic about the flag and patriotism. They sing “Fire” by Gavin DeGraw, with a gospel choir backing them up–the military chorus. I don’t like the production. Their four voices are enough. I miss the simplicity of their earlier performances.  Howie salutes them for their service and talent. Simon calls them inspirational. “I think the public are going to vote you into the later round.” Gabrielle calls their voices a blessing for folks who are facing trauma. Julianne says, riffing off a line in the song, “We are one tribe.”

Ansley Burns – Young Soul Singer – WILDCARD – When she was cut, Ansley cried her eyes out. Now she’s back as a wildcard. Will Simon make her sing again for a THIRD time? Hm. Her first outing featured soul songs. Now she’s chirping along to a classic country song “Swinging.” She’s only 12 years old and performs like she hopes to win a sash in a kid beauty pageant. She has pitch problems!  In a few years she might be ready, but not now. Simon said the internet hated him after he cut her. He admits that he didn’t like the song, but thinks she has a great voice and personality. He calls her a “little fighter.” Julianne says, “never stop believing in yourself.” Howie is thrilled that she’s back, “you make the world smile.”

Alex Dowis – Blacklight Painter – After communism fell in the czech republic, he learned street art. The blacklight art was the next step. Tonight, he’s painting the history of the world, starting with the Big Bang and dinosaurs. And monkeys! Obvs not a creationist. It ends with a quote from Stephen Hawking. Simon said it felt too much like being in a science museum. He didn’t feel it emotionally. Gabrielle disagrees. “It was mankind, it was beautifully. “If Banksy and Darwin had a child, it would be you. Julianne calls his depiction of the history of time “magical.”

Sophie Peccora – Young singer/Youtube star – Simon is running back to his seat as Terry introduces Sophie. Quit smoking Simon, and you won’t be late! Sophie even sings an original song–complete with flashing lyrics–in her video package. What never gets mentioned is that the 15 year old has a Youtube channel with a kabillion or so followers. On stage, she sings a heartfelt ditty about feeling good in your own skin. She’s like a modern teen beat poet, dropping angsty relatable bit to fellow teens. No wonder she’s popular. Fun fact: She was   Golden Buzzer. Julianne got teary during her video package. “You speak truth,” she says. Howie calls her the most “important thing on this stage so far.” Gabrielle calls her poignant and important. “You are such a rock star,” she says. Simon loves her simplicity, “an immaculate performance…I’m slightly in awe of you.”

Carmen Carter – Diva Belter – Carmen’s parents talk about how she loved to entertain folks, even as a child. They are so proud of her! She performs a creative cover of “Believer” by Imagine Dragons. Performing a contemporary song at this point is risky and smart. She’s playing the leather clad Tina Turner type singer well. She’s actually got swag to go along with those strong vocals.

This song is really easy to bomb, so props to her. She’s effortless tonight, hitting crazy notes flawlessly. For the first time, I am actually impressed. Oh. Howie isn’t standing. Simon was sold on the song choice halfway through. “You made us all believers,” says Gabrielle. “Unforgettable.” Julianne loved the risk, “You put your Carmen twist on it.” Howie didn’t like the song choice. He’s wrong.

Emerald Belles – Teen “high kick” dance team – These gals are from Texas. We see them get an American Idol like homecoming. The mayor or whoever mock Howie for dissing the group (he compared them unfavorably to the Rockettes). Ha. They do their thing-dancing with extreme precision. The high kicks never stop. The girls end the routine dropping into painful looking splits. “You guys killed it!” says Gabrielle. Howie says the production elevated their performance, “You blew the roof off…spectacular.” Julianne thinks they stepped it up. “You’re better together.” Simon says they define what AGT is all about–hard work and ambition. He ask Howie to apologize. He stands up and bows.

GForce – Teen Girl group – These tween girls are from Canada. They dream about being the next big girl group. The action begins in a space age manicure shop. Hm. There’s rapping. Again, this is very pageanty Kidz Bop. But I guess the kiddos would like it? They’re performing an original song that’s all about GIRL POWER y’all. “We’re going to do our own thing! They shout. The performance also includes major choreography. Howie compliments their energy. “I’m filled with girl power, which is weird for a middle aged bald guy.” Gabrielle is proud, “You rocked it.” Julianne loves their individuality. Simon calls them fearless, although he did not like the song. He warns them to bring a better song if they make it. Gabrielle reminds him that HE told them they needed to be in control. I dunno. How many 12 year old girls are actually watching AGT?

Greg Morton – Comedian/impressionist – In his video package, Greg talks about going to the movies as a kid and mimicking the voices. “I got pretty good at it!” He shares that it has been a tough road. He kicks off his performance with some Lion King, followed by a bunch more familiar voices. Greg is a one man nostalgia machine–recreating voices from famous movies of various eras. Can’t help but smile at this! Oh gosh.

He’s even nailing Marlon Brando in the Godfather. He yells at Simon to “She me the money.” Heh. And finishes with Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back.”  Gabrielle says he brings everyone back to their childhoods. Julianne is on the edge of her seat. “You are activating our imagination…a true artist.” Simon worried whether he could own the stage–he proved him wrong. It’s a step up, Simon says. “I hope the audience shows you the money with their votes.”

Cristina Ramos Singer – She’s Spain’s Got Talent 2016 winner. AND the Superfans voted her through over favs Darci Lynne and Courtney Hadwin. She will be “trying something special” for the final. She sings “Rihanna” first in an operatic style. UGH. No likey this at all. Then she throws off her cape and breaks out the rock. Zzzz. At this point, she’s predictable, pulling off what seems like a party trick. She’s actually a good singer. I would take her more seriously if she didn’t hide behind gimmicks. Plz make the screeching stop plz. Mel thinks her wild side is brilliant. Heidi says there are notes in there she’s never heard before. She compares her to a “wild animal.” Howie calls her a superstar. Simon calls the vocal “insanely good.” and “You may have thrown the whole show up in the air.”

Preacher Lawson – Comedian – Preacher says he isn’t the funniest comedian, but he works hard. He just kept pushing for 8 years before AGT elevated his career. Ha ha. Preacher gets a long face when he finds out his nemesis Darci Lynne (He came in second to her) was added as a wildcard. He goes on about not liking alcohol. Joke. Joke Joke. I dunno, he’s losing me here. The bit about Darci Lynne was the funniest part! One thing I’ll say–he’s in unbelievably good shape. He rips off his T shirt and is EASY ON THE DAMN EYES. Mel says “You are just funny, no matter what you say! Go to the next person!” Simon says, “Tonight I felt I was watching a star. Everything about you has gotten better.” Howie says, “You give us everything. We love you. I am so proud a comedian has made it this far.” He thinks the 50 state peeps are talking about him right now.

She was disappointed to lose her chance to be the world champion. But then she got the Wildcard! She’s happy, but nervous. She’s bringing her puppet Petunia as her “lucky charm.” This time Petunia sings Italian Opera. And Darci shows off another facet of her singing ability. Darci saved the big gun for a moment like this. Too bad she’s performing third. Death spot! Simon says, “Wow. Wow. Wow! This is your best ever performance. I think you may win tonight.” Mel says, “Your delivery and your confidence…you deserve everything.” Howie calls it “Truly amazing. You still surprise. You’ve got a shot at this.”

Teen Ventriloquist Sings "O Mio Babbino Caro" – America's Got Talent: The Champions

Kechi returns to the AGT stage with a song that will take your breath away

Kechi returns to the AGT stage with a song that will take your breath away

She is Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer. It gave her confidence. She believes she DOES have a good voice. She’s the singer who nearly died in a plane crash and was left with serious burns over much of her body. She sings Sia’s “Opportunity” in a strong clear voice. Her range is good and her intonation is beautiful. The judges give her an ovation. Simon says there is one word “Inspiration.” She is one of his favorite contestants. Howie thinks she makes America’s heart burst. He calls her a champion. Mel thinks she has become one of America’s favorite acts. However, she didn’t like the song choice. The crowd begins booing. Kechi says she appreciates honest feedback.

Brian talks about being picked on in school–a theme that dominated his initial AGT run. He talks about how music was his escape. He’s singing a theatrical song tonight–back to his roots. He sings “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. I SAY ENOUGH SONGS FROM THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Bleh. He’s playing it safe tonight. When I saw the Wicked sign, thought he’d be singing something from THAT show. “Defying Gravity” would have fit his backstory. Oh well!  The panel gives him a standing ovation. Mel says, “That was massive! You take us somewhere.” She calls it a “slam dunk.” Simon says “You are a champion. This performance may change your life.” Brian thanks the judges for the opportunity. “My heart is very full right now.”

Jon says he’s been a wildcard his whole life! He’s here to “win it.” He involves the judges in his bit, doing sort of a “greatest hits” of his tricks. Whoa. He ties the tricks back to stuff that happened in the past and it matches up! Interesting bit. “I’m ending the same way I started,” Jon says. And again, the judges are on their feet. Heidi says, “You are multi-talented. You boost our spirit.” Simon says, “You just came back and blew the roof off. You have a shot.” Howie says, “I’m stunned. Only two words to describe what you did–wildcard.” Jon announces that his wife is pregnant. That’s nice.

Angelica Hale – Singer – Eleven year old Angelica is Howie’s Golden Buzzer. She’s a little more nervous than before. She realizes the competition if fierce, but she believes in herself. She sings “Impossible” by Shontelle.  She’s trying too hard–oversinging some big notes. She’s young and has yet to develop her own style. Howie says “I don’t know how the 50 states can choose a winner.” Mel felt it was an obvious improvement over her last performance. Simon says she deserves so much respect for coming back. That was kind of a kiss off…Angelica Hale – Singer – Eleven year old Angelica is Howie’s Golden Buzzer. She’s a little more nervous than before. Sand Artist – She’s Terry Crews Golden Buzzer. She was very nervous last time. She never expected to receive the Golden Buzzer. I never expected her to get it. Hm. Tonight, she’s telling a story about war and a family. So this is a WWII story. She destroys a photo of a couple sitting on a bench. Then she draws some sort of memorial? And the woman is alone. Her art is so depressing. She has a baby and the caption is “Love always wins.” Mel says, “You left everything right on the sand.” Heidi calls her a “true artist.” Simon says, “This was one of the most beautiful creative things I have seen on the show.”
