GIRAFFE DAD: Celebrate the holiday with Oliver

Last year's Father's Day festivities at Animal Adventure Park held a hopeful air of celebration for the park's male giraffe, Oliver, since park officials then suspected he would soon become a father.

Fast-forward a year and meet Tajiri — calf of Oliver and the park's other giraffe, April — whose birth in April put all eyes on the park in Harpursville.

This year's Father's Day celebration, on June 18, comes with a packed combination of things for Dad and things for giraffes.

Animal Adventure will award the first 50 fathers to the park a complimentary barbecue lunch, and everyone will get a 10 percent discount on giraffe items in the gift shop.

In conjunction with World Giraffe Day — which falls on June 21 — there will be giraffe-themed crafts and activities, as well as giraffe keeper, a sneak peek of the giraffe barn, and special treats for new parents April and Oliver.

World Giraffe Day is an annual event created by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to raise support, create awareness and shed light on the challenges giraffes face in the wild.

WISH Granted: 10-year-old boy meets April the giraffe

Ten-year-old Alex Johnson loves animals, but there's one in particular he traveled a long way to see.

Alex, who lives in Avon, Ohio, spent an afternoon at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, where he and his parents, like so many others who've visited the park since its season began in May, came face to face with its tallest — and most recognized — resident: April the giraffe.

For Alex, who has a life-threatening seizure disorder, meeting April; her mate, Oliver; and their new calf, Tajiri, was a dream realized with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Johnsons joined thousands of other families across the globe on the morning of April 15, as more than 1.2 million viewers watched Tajiri’s birth broadcast live on YouTube from the park’s giraffe barn in the small town of Harpursville.

April’s livestream had more than 232 million live views and 7.6 billion minutes of live watch time since February, second only to League of Legends eSports, which has been around since 2012, according to YouTube.

While Make-A-Wish has granted more than 285,000 wishes since 1980, Alex’s might just be the first of its kind.

Certainly, Animal Adventure Park is not the only facility housing a giraffe. But it’s where April lives.

Alex’s wish was simple: to travel the six hours from Ohio to a 20-acre sloping stretch of land in the northeast corner of Broome County and meet the giraffe he has spent months watching on a computer screen.

On Tuesday afternoon, he not only fed carrots to the giraffes from the park’s viewing deck, but he and his family met with the park staff and were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the giraffe barn, where the park’s livestream camera is affixed to a wooden beam, and through which Alex and his family watched and waited with the rest of the world to see the birth of April’s calf, Tajiri, who weighed 130 pounds and stood 5 feet, 9 inches tall.

“When we received the call from Make-A-Wish, this was truly a no-brainer for us,” said park owner Jordan Patch in a statement. “April has had such an impact worldwide, and we want to ensure that her exposure not only has an impact on animal conservation efforts, but also on any lives that she can touch in a positive way.”

Last week, the park announced the camera would continue to stream live footage of the giraffe family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday — it had previously gone offline following Tajiri’s birth.

Now, having met the park’s celebrity giraffes up close, “Wish Kid” Alex will continue to enjoy the opportunity to watch them from afar.

A golf tournament will be held to raise money for Make-A-Wish Central New York — which operates in 15 counties — on June 12. The 19th annual Nelcorp Make-A-Wish Open begins at 11 a.m. at Traditions at the Glen in Johnson City. Last year’s event raised more than $30,000 for the organization, according to its website.
