ALF Update: ALF the Giraffe Leaves Brights Zoo to New Home

It’s been a heartbreaking morning here at the zoo. Approx 3am a fire broke out in one of our large barns. Limestone volunteer fire department, Sulpher Springs Volunteer fire department and Nolichuckey volunteer fire departments arrived shortly after. Jonesborough Fire department did not respond.

At this time we are still out working with the fire department and accessing damage. We will post later today with more information. At this time our family and our staff need time to process this.

ALF update:

ALF has found his forever home. ALF will be going to wildlife partners in San Antonio, TX.

On October 15th, Maggie and Zoo director David Bright will be leaving Brights Zoo with ALF and delivering him to his new home. Wildlife Partners currently has 6 giraffes including ALF. They have 1 young female that is very close in age to ALF.

We at Brights Zoo feel like this is the best possible fit for ALF and he will be starting his own family; it will be difficult for all of us to see him leave. Maggie will get to spend at least a full day with the keepers at Wild Life Partners to ensure ALF has an easy transition into his new surroundings.

ALF is still on the bottle and will be for another 5 or 6 months. He has began eating hay and grain as well. The reasons for ALF moving at this age are for his safety and a brighter future. It's much easier to transport a giraffe that is just under 8 foot tall than it is to transport one that is 18 feet tall. It is also much easier for a young giraffe to adapt to new surroundings.

The founder of Wildlife Partners, Brian Gilroy, came and visited ALF about a month ago. Of course like all of us, ALF captured his heart. Brights Zoo and Wildlife Partners will remain in contact for years to come. We will follow ALF through this new journey.

Of course everyone here at Brights Zoo will miss ALF and I'm sure some of us will have to plan a vacation or two around going to Texas to visit ALF. We want to thank all of ALF's followers for your positive outpouring of love for ALF. Brights Zoo and #teamalf will continue to raise money for giraffe conservation.

Dawn Sheehan Ryan Why am I crying😰😰 I know this is the best thing for Alf and he will be surrounded by his new Giraffe family, but damn, this is just making me cry like a little baby. I think we have all fallen in love with Alf and Maggie as a team and the thought of them not being together, or not seeing the Daily Dose of Alf, with both of them is going to take some time to adjust to.

Maggie, I cannot imagine how hard it will be for you…he is your baby…but to have had that experience with him, a one like none of us have ever seen, is something beyond amazing. I'm really happy we all get to follow his progress and journey thru life, and that Brights Zoo/Maggie is a household name now in my house!

Debra Brown Aww sad to see him go but know that he is going to a great place because you all picked it! I hope we can still get updates on his well being as I have grown very attached to this little "big" guy!

Dana Lerner While I'm glad to hear he'll be hiking to a good home, my heart can't help but break. I have just loved seeing the bond ALF & Maggie share. It's really been amazing. Maggie, thank you for all of the hard work you've done.

Thank you for taking the time to share all of those precious videos of the two of you together, and for the ones of just him, along with all of the photos. I will surely miss all of this very much.
I hope his new keepers will update is as well as you have with both photos & videos.
May God bless you, and all who have helped, and will help Alf in his life's journey
Love you little guy!

Connie Tomas Sad to hear that Alf is leaving. I have so enjoyed all the pictures and updates. But i know you all would not do this if it weren't in his best interest. Thanks for sharing Alf with all of us. Prayers for smooth transition to his new home.

Betty Louwsma We knew the day would but I just wasn't expecting it so soon. With the Alf alerts from mama Maggie, it started to feel like we were all family and now a family member is moving away. I can't imagine how hard it will be for Maggie. I hope he does well in his new home-Maggie, you have prepared him well, but I will miss him.
